NAF pure Limestone Flour supplement is a rich source of calcium designed to supplement bone growth. This supplement should be added to animal feed when there is a requirement for additional calcium that is not being met in the current diet. Calcium is vital to horses for bone integrity, growth and tissue health. Calcium salts are responsible for 70% of the weight of the bone, and it gives bone it's rigidity and strength. Calcium has a number of other important roles throughout the body, including muscle contractions, particularly of the heart, and it has a role in the nerve transmission in the central nervous system.
One of the most well known role of calcium is that of milk production, and it is particularly important that lactating mares have an adequate supply. NAF Limestone Flour is recommended as a source of calcium for those on a cereal based diet, especially if bran is included, as this will balance the calcium to phosphorous ratio. A lack of calcium is seen as epiphysis and weakness. NAF Limestone Flour includes only ground limestone and is, essentially, pure calcium.
NAF However does not recommend Limestone Flour for youngstock, as excess calcium can lead to developmental abnormalities such as Osteochondrosis desicans (OCD).
